Sayisi Dene First Nation

Megan Whonnock is the artist behind Coastal Tundra. Megan is a proud member of the Sayisi Dene First Nation located in the far reaches of Northern Manitoba, but now resides in the very coastal territory of her husband (‘Namgis). Much of Megan’s life has been spent on the beautiful west coast where she’s advocated and worked for urban Indigenous youth and community. Beadwork is very much an extension of this passion; a way to ensure personal connection, practice, and teachings while living far from home. Megan learned to sew and bead at an early age and now passes those teachings onto her children, while learning new skills as their family has grown. Together they create moccasins and jewellery; many of which repurpose hide, melton and cedar bark remnants from larger family regalia projects. We create to sustain our teachings and to keep our connection with our ancestors strong and proud.
