Clayton Carl is a Plains-Cree master carver recognized for their highly detailed wood work. He moved to the Island at 16 from Saskatchewan and lived in the Fraser Valley with the Stolo River People. He draws inspiration from Pacific Northwest landscapes and cultural teachings. Carl creates pieces that honour the traditional techniques while introducing contemporary form and texture. His work ranges from small delicate, to deep relief carvings, to large scale carvings. His art ranges because it pours out of him in the most unexpected ways. He works primarily with red and yellow cedar and over the past two years has been experimenting and exploring other species of wood and exotic hardwoods. 

Driven by a desire to reveal the hidden grain and history within the wood, Clayton has developed a distinctive approach to carving throughout years of dedicated studio practice. He is deeply committed to the tactile experience of carving, spending significant time sourcing and understanding the raw material before beginning a piece. He also enjoys the spiritual aspect of the art as he relates to the supernatural.
