Chickasaw Matriarchal Society
All Chickasaws belonged to a clan of his or her mother; this is known as a matrilineal system. One of the main functions of the clan was to provide kinship with clan members in other villages. The womyn were and are the storykeepers, the holders of the family. When decisions are made through the Clan the womyn is the centre circle, and the men are the outer circle. Not all business is conducted this way now, for clan gatherings, weddings, funerals, or other events this is the process.
